TikToker Throwing in Towel on Being a Flight Attendant
Kat Kamalani uploaded a short clip to Instagram and TikTok not long ago. In the clip, Kat shares that she worked as a flight attendant for over six years. During that time, the viral sensation worked for some of the largest companies in the industry. Unfortunately, she hated every single second of the job.
However, instead of complaining about the former job, Kat shares helpful insights into why it was so bad. When you hear the reasons, it’s easier to understand why she quit.
Why Did She Quit?
In the two-minute clip, Kat shares several reasons why being a flight attendant wasn’t for her. Let’s look at some of the primary reasons she shared.
Seniority
One of the biggest complaints from Kat was that your hiring date determined just about everything about the job. Seniority controlled the work schedule, holidays, and even what aircraft she flew on.
Despite having worked for six years, it appears she felt she was often getting the short end of the stick. Kamalani states that new is typically anything under five years of experience.
Additionally, one of the big perks for flight attendants is being able to fly standby on flights for free. However, as Kat points out, even this factors seniority into the equation. If another flight attendant with more seniority signs up to fly standby, they’ll get chosen ahead of you.
Unfortunately, many flight attendants spend years paying their dues to enjoy the perks truly. Some aren’t willing to wait that long and decide to jump ship and find a different career.

Intense Training
Another reason Kat hated being a flight attendant was because of the intense amount of training that was required. She states that the job required two months of extreme training. Supposedly, she and her fellow trainees underwent 15-hour days six days a week.
During the training, they went through training and took tests, which they were required to pass with 80%. Failing to pass the tests resulted in getting kicked out of the program.
However, it’s important to remember that flight attendants deal with many unpredictable situations during flights. They need to be ready to handle just about anything.
The People
Kat goes on to share that most passengers completely misunderstand the role of flight attendants. Most think the job is nothing but getting drinks and snacks. However, a flight attendant’s most important task is to help ensure the safety of everyone who boards the flight.
Additionally, Kamalani discusses how people traveling often are different from their usual selves. They’re constantly stressed or tired, which can cause them to be crankier than usual. Who typically gets the raw end of these interactions? You guessed it, the flight attendants and the rest of the crew.
The Schedule
The next thing the influencer complains about is the schedule. Kamalani discusses how most people imagine flying to exotic places like Hawaii or Europe. However, she educates viewers by saying you’re more likely to spend time flying between locations like Idaho and Minnesota, especially at first. Those with more seniority will choose the better routes and destinations.
She also states that new flight attendants often battle red-eye flights and have short layovers. Combining the stress of the job and jet lag can create a pretty chaotic lifestyle.

It’s Not as Glorious as It Seems
Finally, KatKamalani closes out her video by stating that all of these reasons are why the career is less glamorous than it seems. She never says it is a bad job or that she regrets doing it. Kamalani explains that her family got to see the world and travel to places when they couldn’t otherwise afford the airline tickets.
So, while the profession has some cons, it’s all bad. However, it’s far from as glorious as what most people assume. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that those serving you at 30,000 feet live luxuriously.
Be Nice to Flight Attendants
The men and women serving you on your flight have a vital role. Many passengers take these individuals for granted. Unfortunately, some passengers use them to relieve their frustrations or stresses from traveling. However, we strongly encourage you to resist this temptation. Instead, consider picking up a gift of chocolates to bless the crew.
