The setting of Greenbow, Alabama, isn’t based on a particular town. Despite this, it incorporates various features and characteristics of a typical southern city at the time. The historical heritage is evident as Forrest talks about his hometown, especially how he received his name.

You’ll discover the peaceful and friendly atmosphere when you pull into town. It doesn’t matter if you’ve lived here your entire life or only passing through; they’ll treat you like you’re family.
The town was established in 1872 by the Varn brothers after they sold the right of way of their land to install railroad tracks. This decision played a massive role in the future of the town. It was close to a variety of agricultural areas. These tracks helped the town serve and develop supporting infrastructures for farmers and those in the industry.
Another boost for Varnville was when Hollywood executives chose it for the setting of Forrest Gump. Despite the film being three decades old, it continues to attract visitors to the area. Some hope to run into Forrest and Forrest Jr., while others know there’s not much to see.
Can You Visit Forrest Gump’s House?
Unfortunately, you can search for Forrest’s house in Varnville, South Carolina, but you won’t find it. Despite how it may look on the big screen, the crew built the home temporarily for the film.
Set designers quickly constructed the home in only a couple of months. The interior featured only a handful of completed rooms, as that’s all you’d see in the film. Since the house was not up to code, it was demolished shortly after filming wrapped up.
Forrest’s childhood friend and future wife, Jenny, had a home built for the movie. Additionally, after production, this home suffered the same fate. Visitors wishing to see something familiar from the film can visit the entrance to the Gump property. Regardless, don’t cross the line, it’s private property.

Visit Lake Warren State Park

Their longest trail is a 1.25-mile interpretive looping trail. It’s relatively easy and offers opportunities to spot alligators, water birds, and maybe a snake or two if you’re lucky. Read the signs along the way and quiz yourself on your knowledge of the wildlife that inhabits the area.
Explore Historic Downtown Hampton
The Historic Downtown of Hampton is only a few miles up the road from Varnville. This is the county seat that we mentioned earlier that has helped the city to continue to exist over the years. It provides an opportunity to stroll the streets and appreciate the simpler atmosphere.
Stop into one of the many small businesses and locally-owned shops. The owners provide some incredible Southern hospitality and often love to share about the area. Hampton has everything you need if you’re into antique stores, boutiques, and art galleries. You never know what treasures you might find!
If shopping isn’t your thing, walk around and appreciate the architecture. They’ve done an incredible job of preserving it over the years. The Hampton County Courthouse is the most notable of the area’s architecture.
Learn History in Walterboro
Walterboro is a 30-minute drive from Varnville, but it’s worth the trip. Many describe it as the “Front Porch of the Lowcountry.” When you visit Walterboro, you’ll find some incredible architecture that defines its history.
Set out on foot and explore the historic districts of Walterboro. Some of the homes date back as far as 1814. The magnificent beauty of these homes is remarkable and is easy to appreciate. If you’re not into architecture, there’s still plenty to see and do.
