What is a Jackalope?
The Jackalope is a mythical creature that combines a jackrabbit and an antelope. It has the body of a jackrabbit but the antlers of an antelope. Witnesses claim it uses its long ears to detect humans and its powerful hind legs to be lightning-quick.
As with many animals with antlers, jackalopes use them to attract mates, defend themselves, and hunt their prey. Trust us, you don’t want to be on the receiving end of these antlers. Combined with their incredible speed, they can do severe damage if threatened.

History of the Jackalope
The first sightings of the Jackalope began in 1932 in Douglas, Wyoming. A resident, Douglas Herrick, started selling them out of his taxidermy business. It didn’t take long for word to spread about these unique stuffed animals. Once people heard about them, Herrick’s brother and son couldn’t help him create them fast enough.
Before long, they appeared on the walls of bars, trading posts, and roadside attractions nationwide. The popularity grew over the decades, and the Jackalope became a part of American pop culture.
You can still purchase these stuffed animals today. In addition, you can find them on postcards, advertisements, and other merchandise. The next time you find yourself in a souvenir shop for tourists, keep your eyes peeled. It may be your opportunity to get one and hang it on your wall.
Where is the World’s Largest Jackalope?
The world’s largest Jackalope is in Douglas, Wyoming. This colossal roadside attraction is known as the “Jackalope Capital of the World.” The giant statue stands proudly as a quirky symbol of the town’s acceptance of this mythical creature and its role in American folklore.
The Douglas jackalope, measuring 13 feet tall, is a fiberglass sculpture. It serves as a nod to the town’s history and attracts tourists and travelers passing through the area. This oversized Jackalope is a testament to the enduring charm and imaginative spirit the legend inspires.
What Is Cottontail Rabbit Papillomavirus?
Unfortunately, the odds of seeing an actual jackalope are not in your favor. Many people mistakenly identify cottontail rabbits with CRPV (Cottontail Rabbit Papillomavirus). This disease causes benign tumors to grow all over their skin.
Typically, these wart-like tumors grow around their eyes, ears, and mouths. In some instances, these animals could grow sharp-looking horns projecting from the top of their heads. While these may look like antlers, they’re unfortunately not.

Despite their odd and unusual appearance, the growths from CPRV are harmless. They don’t typically impact the rabbit’s overall health. However, there have been cases where the tumors can affect their ability to eat or see. This can cause secondary health issues that significantly impact their quality of life.
If you spot a rabbit with these tumors, it’s easy to mistake them for a jackalope. Unfortunately, these encounters are almost always side effects of the virus and not actual antlers. Some even believe that these rabbits were the inspiration behind the Jackalope.
Other Mythical Animals
The Jackalope isn’t the only mythical animal on Earth. We’ve found several others you’ll want to watch out for while adventuring. Let’s take a look at these creatures!
Chupacabra
Another one of our favorite mythical creatures is the chupacabra. This urban legend has a more prominent reputation in Latin American countries. Its name translates as “goat-sucker” in Spanish. The chupacabra’s reputation grew after several mysterious livestock deaths in the mid-1990s.
Farmers found large amounts of dead goats, chickens, and other small animals. However, the strangest part of the attacks was that farmers claimed the animals were drained entirely of blood. There was no bloody mess or trail to follow to track the culprit.
With sightings being rare, the descriptions vary. Luckily, there are some common characteristics between reports. Most witnesses claim it is a small, alien-like creature with sharp fangs. In addition, it has quills or spikes that run along its back, and it can hop or fly. We suggest you proceed with caution when adventuring in any Latin American country.

Wolpertinger
We rarely hear much about mythical creatures from European countries like Germany. That’s why when we heard about the Wolpertinger, we wanted to share it with you. Like the Jackalope, the Wolpertinger has a rabbit’s body but multiple features from other animals. These can include wings, antlers, fangs, and various tails.
Its origins are similar to the Jackalope in that many of the sightings were in taxidermy form. Many point to the Wolpertinger as an attempt at humor because of the exaggerated features. However, whether real or not, it’s become the subject of many festivals and events throughout the country.
Hippogriff
Greek and Roman mythology are full of incredible mythical creatures. One of the most popular is the hippogriff, which combines two powerful animals into one. It’s a hybrid animal with the body and legs of a horse. However, it also has the wings and head of an eagle.
While actual sightings of hippogriffs are few and far between, it has appeared in pop culture. One of the most notable appearances was in the famous Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowlings. The series introduced this mythical creature to a whole new generation.

Cabbit
The cabbit is a hybrid creature that combines the physical features of cats and rabbits. Typically, it has a cat’s body but a rabbit’s facial features and long ears. Some reports indicate it hops like a rabbit instead of walking like a cat.
During the 1990s, the cabbit gained popularity due to an anime series called “Tenchi Muyo!” One of the main characters in the series is a cabbit. Its cat-like form includes rabbit-like ears and other behaviors often associated with rabbits.
Because of its popularity in anime, it has appeared in various forms of media. So, while it may not be the scariest mythical creature, it’s gained tremendous popularity throughout Asia. However, appearances outside of anime or Asian cultures are rare.
Keep Your Eyes Out for the Jackalope
Unfortunately, the odds of spotting a jackalope aren’t great. However, Douglas, Wyoming, does issue hunting licenses for these creatures. They are also available from the famous Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota. So keep your eyes open for the Jackalope and other mythical creatures roaming wherever you travel.
