What Are Disney Cruises?
Disney cruises are a luxury vacation experience that’s nothing short of magical. It combines their unique storytelling abilities with the characters you’ve likely seen on the big screen. Disney currently operates a fleet of five ships and will add a sixth in 2024.
What separates Disney cruises from the rest is the immersive experience they create. Passengers can enjoy character meet-and-greets, poolside movie screenings, and other fun activities. You can enjoy these adventures while exploring the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, and many other exciting locations.

Are Disney Cruises Expensive?
Unfortunately, as with most things Disney, their cruises aren’t cheap. They’re typically some of the more expensive options than other cruise lines. However, passengers can expect high-quality service, entertainment, and a premium experience.
Prices can vary significantly depending on the ship, the itinerary, the length of the cruise, the stateroom category, and the time of year. If you visit during holidays and peak seasons, they typically cost more. No matter when you cruise, you can create priceless memories with your loved ones.
What to Pack for a Disney Cruise
As we said, you don’t want to forget anything when packing. Here are some essential things you’ll need when packing for your Disney cruise.
General Items
There are some general items that you’ll want to make sure you have. You’ll likely have some unique things for you and your crew. Create a checklist of items that must be in your luggage or carry-on.
Medication
If you take any medication, make sure to bring it with you. In the weeks leading up to your trip, check to ensure you have enough to last the entire cruise. Running out in the middle of your journey can be dangerous. Getting a prescription refill while in the middle of the ocean or a foreign port won’t be easy.
In addition to prescriptions, pack standard medicines like seasickness medications, pain relievers, antacids, and allergy medicines. Packing a few bandaids is always a good idea. Again, these are likely all available on the ship but will be costly.
Passport or Required Documents
The documents you’ll need will depend on your cruise and your situation. Disney Cruise Lines encourages passengers to travel with a passport. However, a passport isn’t always required for cruises that set sail and return from the same port in the United States. We suggest getting a passport, making the process smoother and more manageable.
Other documents you may consider bringing include your birth certificate and marriage license. These are typically the required documents for those sailing on a cruise that doesn’t require passports. Parents with custody situations may need a signed document from the other parent. This ensures they consent to leave the country with the minor.
Camera
You’ll likely take many pictures to remember the trip and to share on Instagram. If you prefer to use your phone, free up space before boarding the ship. It can take time to back up pictures and videos to the cloud. This isn’t how you want to spend your time waiting for the boat to leave the port.
Some people prefer to use a designated camera to get more professional results. Remember to bring several SD cards and a battery charger if you’re one of them. Unless you bring your computer, you’ll have to wait until you return to dry land to transfer your pictures. Running out of storage space or battery could leave you unable to take pictures.
Personal Hygiene Items
Just like any trip, pack your personal hygiene items. You might need things like your toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, shaving cream, and any feminine hygiene products. Most ships provide body wash and shampoo in the showers, but it will likely not be high-quality. If you prefer a particular scent or product, bring it with you.

Clothing
You likely don’t want to wear the same clothes during your cruise. As a result, bring several outfits. Pack lightweight and breathable fabrics if you’re sailing in a warm climate. This will help you stay cool and comfortable. Let’s see what other clothes you should toss into your luggage.
Swimwear
Many cruisers set sail to tropical destinations where you can swim almost any time of year. If that’s you, bring at least one bathing suit. Some cruisers pack multiple swimsuits to avoid wearing a cold, wet bathing suit.
If you’re worried about sunburns, consider a swim shirt with built-in sun protection. These can be great to keep the sun off your skin, especially for kids. Parents can avoid fights whenever they remind their kids to reapply sunscreen constantly.
Cold Weather Gear (If Applicable)
Not all cruises are to warm, tropical destinations. Some, primarily those to Alaska, can be pretty chilly. If you are setting sail on one of these adventures, plan accordingly. Bring a jacket, gloves, a stocking cap, and a sweatshirt.
Packing shorts and flip-flops isn’t likely a good idea even if the temperatures aren’t freezing. Most popular cruise ports in Alaska typically don’t experience temperatures warmer than the upper 60s in the summer. If all you bring is flip-flops and sandals, prepare to have cold toes during your trip.
Dining Attire
Cruising on a Disney ship is a luxurious experience. While most of the boat has a rather casual attire, there’s an expectation amongst passengers in the main dining room. Disney allows shorts and T-shirts, but most passengers wear nicer clothes. It’s common to see men in jackets and women in dresses.
You’ll need a more polished look if you plan to dine at any of the adult-only restaurants. While you can still wear jeans, they must be in good condition. You’ll get asked to change if you show up wearing a T-shirt, swimwear, or sports attire.
Pajamas
Don’t forget to bring a pair of comfy pajamas to slip into at the end of the day. Disney cruises can be exhausting, and you’ll need your sleep. You should pack some warmer pajamas if you’re naturally a cold sleeper. Some staterooms can get rather chilly, especially at night.
Since you won’t have laundry, bring two or three pairs of pajamas. Don’t go overboard, but having at least two will probably suffice. You don’t want to overpack on something you’ll only wear while sleeping.
What Not to Pack for a Disney Cruise
While there are many things you need to remember to pack, there are some things you should never pack for your Disney cruise. Like most cruise lines, Disney lists things you shouldn’t bring on the ship. These include firearms, ammunition, homemade food, irons, candles, illegal drugs, alcohol, and fireworks.
However, what we’ve shared isn’t an exhaustive list. Read the prohibited and restricted items list beforehand to avoid potential legal issues or troubles at the port. If you arrive with these items, it could be as simple as security confiscating them or complex as landing you behind bars.

Don’t Forget to Pack Your Mickey Ears
While thinking through what to pack for a Disney cruise, remember your Mickey ears. There’s a good chance you’ll run into the mouse and his friends onboard the ship. Putting on these iconic ears almost always creates a magical experience, no matter how old you are. So what are you waiting for? Start creating your packing list and get ready to experience the magic at sea.
