Jason and Rae Miller of Getaway Couple have been on an incredible Alaskan adventure, but their time in Homer, Alaska, didn’t start off quite as smoothly as they had hoped. They had been riding the Alaska high—breathtaking landscapes, exciting experiences, and smooth travel days—but then they hit a few bumps in the road. Come along as we follow the Getaway Couple facing challenges in Homer!
Camping on the Homer Spit
First, they arrived at their campsite on the Homer Spit, securing one of the last available beachfront spots. They took their dog, Carmen, on a long, peaceful walk, but the overcast skies and chilly temperatures made everything feel a bit subdued. Then, the real trouble began—a powerful storm rolled in.

The Battle with the Wind
The rain wasn’t too bad, but the wind was relentless. With only two of their RV’s jacks down, they swayed on the suspension of their truck all night, making sleep nearly impossible. The biggest culprit? Their slide topper. The flapping from the wind made for a long, restless night, reinforcing Rae’s long-held belief that slide toppers can be a nightmare in high winds.
First Impressions of Homer
Beyond the sleepless night, Jason and Rae had mixed feelings about Homer upon arrival.
The drive into town wasn’t as breathtaking as other parts of Alaska they had visited. And while Homer is world-famous for halibut fishing, neither of them is big on fishing. Searching for activities, all they could find were—you guessed it—fishing tours.

A Stunning View Changes Everything
But then, they saw the view.
When they finally pulled over the last hill and saw the town against a backdrop of towering mountains, Homer’s beauty revealed itself. Spirits lifted, they started to appreciate their surroundings more. But the next morning, a new challenge presented itself—a yellow ocean.
The Allergy Attack
The ocean near their campsite was covered in a thick layer of pine pollen. It wasn’t just on the water; clouds of yellow pollen drifted in from the mountains, making everything hazy.
Struggling to Breathe
Soon, both Jason and Rae felt it—stuffy noses, itchy eyes, and relentless sneezing. Jason, who usually doesn’t suffer from allergies, was struggling, and Rae, who does, was miserable, to say the least.

Pushing Through the Day
Moving sluggishly from lack of sleep and allergy fatigue, they pushed through the day, checking off chores: laundry, grocery shopping, and preparing for their much-anticipated bear tour. But even that had a hiccup.
The Bear Tour Changes
Jason and Rae had booked a bear-watching tour to the famous Brooks Falls, where brown bears gather to catch salmon in mid-air as they leap up the falls. It’s one of the most iconic bear-watching spots in the world. But there was a problem—there were no bears.
A Last-Minute Change
Due to the late spring, the salmon hadn’t arrived yet, so the bears weren’t at the falls. The tour company called them with an offer: Switch to a different bear-watching tour where bears had been spotted, or take a partial refund. Disappointed but flexible, they opted for the switch. And boy, was that the right choice!
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Bear Encounter
Instead of Brooks Falls, Jason and Rae found themselves flying into Lake Clark National Park—a place they had initially planned to skip.
A Scenic Flight to Remember
The scenic flight alone was worth the trip, offering breathtaking views of Alaska’s rugged terrain from above.
Up-Close with the Bears
Once on the ground, the tour took them into prime bear territory, where they saw yearlings and cubs up close. They watched in awe as a mother bear guided her cubs, and at one point, a bear casually walked behind their group while they crouched in a protective formation. Thankfully, the bear wasn’t interested in them—it was more curious about the planes parked nearby.

Expert Guidance and Safe Viewing
The tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable, reading the bears’ body language and ensuring everyone maintained a respectful and safe distance. At one point, when a mother bear seemed slightly uneasy about human presence, the guides quickly adjusted the group’s position to give her more space. It was a masterclass in responsible wildlife viewing.
Reflecting on Homer
After their unforgettable bear experience, Jason and Rae took a day to relax—something they don’t often do while traveling. Slowing down and appreciating their surroundings helped shift their perspective on Homer.
First Impressions Can Be Misleading
At first, the bad weather, pollen, and lack of activities had them feeling disappointed, but by the time they were ready to leave, they had a newfound appreciation for the town. They realized that sometimes, first impressions don’t tell the whole story. Regardless, the Getaway Couple faced challenges in Homer and conquered them in strides.
The Next Adventure: Gold Panning
With their time in Homer coming to an end, Jason and Rae set their sights on Bertha Creek, a spot they had previously visited but hadn’t fully explored for gold panning.
Now, with a bit more experience under their belts, they were eager to try again and see if they could strike it rich.
A New Channel Idea?
They even joked about starting a new channel called Prospector Rae and the Gold Digger—with Jason playing the role of the gold digger, of course. Their enthusiasm for panning had grown, and they were excited to give it another shot.

Final Thoughts
This leg of Jason and Rae’s Alaskan adventure proved that travel isn’t always perfect, but there’s always something positive to take away!
Rolling with the Punches
Some days are challenging—bad weather, sleepless nights, unexpected plan changes—but those are the moments that test your flexibility and mindset. Instead of letting setbacks ruin their trip, they rolled with the punches, made adjustments, and walked away with incredible experiences they never expected.
Looking Ahead
From stormy nights and allergy attacks to up-close encounters with wild bears, this was a trip they’d never forget. Although the Getaway Couple faced challenges in Homer, they also made life-long memories. And, of course, they were already looking ahead to their next adventure—jet skiing in Whittier!
