The Feds Are Investigating Grand Design RV’s Frame Flex Issue

One of the biggest bombshells in the RV industry has been dropped as the federal government investigates Grand Design RV’s frame flex issue. With many RV owners concerned about the structural integrity of their vehicles, this investigation has sent shockwaves through the community. As the situation unfolds, questions about safety and accountability are rising to the surface. Let’s dive right in.

Understanding Frame Flex

Frame flex refers to the excessive bending or flexing of an RV’s frame under normal use, leading to structural issues such as cracks in sidewalls and floors, misaligned doors and windows, slide-outs extending during transit, and cargo doors opening unexpectedly.

These problems compromise the RV’s structural integrity and pose significant safety risks.

NHTSA’s Involvement and Investigation Progress

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an official probe into Grand Design’s frame flex issues after receiving complaints regarding the structural integrity of their fifth wheels.

The models under investigation include the Momentum and Solitude lines from 2017 to 2023. This investigation encompasses approximately 55,887 units.

In December 2024, the ODI issued an Information Request to Grand Design RV, LLC, seeking detailed information regarding the alleged defects, including design specifications, testing data, and related communications. Grand Design has requested extensions to provide comprehensive responses, citing the complexity of the data and resource constraints during the holiday season.

Simultaneously, in February 2025, the ODI contacted Lippert Components, the frame manufacturer, requesting information pertinent to the investigation. This includes design and engineering details, testing and evaluation reports, and any internal communications related to the alleged frame flex issues.

Dispute Between Grand Design and Lippert Components

A central aspect of the investigation is determining responsibility for the frame flex issues.

Grand Design asserts that “some frame flex, particularly vertical movement in the upper deck area up to 3/8 inch, is normal” and primarily results in cosmetic defects such as moving sidewalls, cabinet damage, and binding doors. In response, they have developed a technical service bulletin (TSB) to evaluate concerns about excessive frame flex.

However, Lippert Components, the frame manufacturer, contends that the effects of frame flex may also extend back to the front axle of the trailer, indicating more severe structural concerns. This particular ODI resume states,

“Lippert provides frames for multiple trailer manufacturers,
the majority of complaints are for these Grand Design products.”

Impact on Consumers and the Industry

As the federal government investigates Grand Design, this disagreement has left consumers in a difficult position, uncertain about the safety and reliability of their RVs. The combination of declining sales and quality issues has significant implications, including:

  • Consumer Trust: Reports of structural defects and high-profile investigations erode trust in manufacturers, potentially deterring new buyers.
  • Financial Repercussions: Addressing warranty claims and potential recalls can lead to substantial financial losses for manufacturers.
  • Market Shift: The trend toward more affordable RV options suggests a shift in consumer preferences, possibly influencing future manufacturing and marketing strategies.

Steps for Current and Prospective RV Owners

If you’re considering purchasing an RV or currently own a Grand Design model, consider the following:

    • Stay Informed: Follow updates from the NHTSA and Grand Design regarding the investigation and any potential recalls.
    • Inspect Regularly: Regular inspections can help identify early signs of frame flex or other structural issues.
    • Engage with Communities: Joining RV owner forums and groups can provide support, shared experiences, and valuable information.

The RV industry is at a pivotal moment, facing challenges that require transparency, quality improvements, and a renewed focus on consumer trust. As developments unfold, staying informed and proactive is essential for all stakeholders.
